CHANCEL AISLES

In treating the bosses we have divided the Chancel Aisles into Presbytery Aisles and Choir Aisles. Prideaux and Shafto’s numbering runs directly from 122 to 129A in the North Aisle, and from 130 to 137A in the South Aisle, but here the sequence is divided according to the building date.

The corbels and label-stops of the easternmost bays of the North and South Presbytery Aisles are treated above, along with The East Presbytery Aisle.

Chancel Aisle Capitals are treated together.

The group of bosses consists of 34A-45A in the East Presbytery Aisle (see heading for the Botanical Master over bosses 34A-45Aff), 122-126 in the North Presbytery Aisle, 130-135 in the South Presbytery Aisle. Bosses 122 and 130 are in the corner bays, and at the same level as the North and South Aisles. The area covered by 34A-35A is at a lower level, in order to allow light to enter the Great East Window in the Presbytery: the resulting well in the roof is drained by two covered conduits running above the arches at the entrances to the Chapels of St John the Evangelist and St Gabriel.
