CHOIR AISLES

The bosses of the Chancel Aisles we have divided into Presbytery and Choir. Prideaux and Shafto’s numbering runs directly from 122 to 129A in the North Aisle, and from 130 to 137A in the South Aisle, but here the sequence is divided according to the building date. The capitals of the Chancel Aisles are treated here together.

These bosses must be the six in the aisles for the carving of which 21/- was paid in Midsummer 1304; see also heading for bosses 86-115.114 Numbers 135-137 retain medieval colour intact. Fine-grained limestone.

128   Head of wimpled queen, with five-lobed foliage; extensive colour fragments.

129   Sow suckling six piglets, with five-lobed foliage.

South

BOSSES 135-137A

Water-washed 1982 (the authors have not had close access in this area).

135 Young, moustached, crowned head; the late Mr Frank Firman of the works staff recalled that it fell when bombed in 1942 and was reset. Colour almost complete: the discoloration of the face may result from basic lead-carbonate white in the flesh-tone having partly changed to black lead-sulphide.

136   Green Man; colour complete.

137   Dragon with foliage. The dragon now appears brown; it was apparently dark iron-oxide red.

137A   Foliage.
