The Great Britain Historical Database is a large
database of British nineteenth and twentieth-century statistics.
A significant amount of work has gone into integrating the
referencing of spatial units, and where practical assembling
data for different dates into single tables. The Great
Britain Historical Database Online (GBHD Online)
provides registered users with web-based access to a significant
part of the Great Britain Historical Database. It
contains:
- Statistics from the 1861 Census and the Registrar General's
reports, 1851-1861
- Employment statistics from the census, 1841-1931
- Demographic statistics from the census, 1841-1931
- Mortality statistics from the Registrar General's reports,
1861-1920
- Marriage statistics from the Registrar General's reports,
1841-1870
- Trade union statistics for the Amalgamated Society of
Engineers (ASE), 1851-1918
- Official poor law statistics, 1859-1915 and 1919-1939
- Small debt statistics from county courts, 1847-1913
The Great Britain Historical Database has been created
by Humphrey Southall, David Gilbert and Ian Gregory as part
of the Great
Britain Historical GIS Programme. It incorporates
data collected by David Gatley, University of Staffordshire,
Clive Lee, University of Aberdeen, Elidh Garrett, Cambridge
Group for the History of Population and Social Structure,
Graham Mooney, Institute of Historical Research, P. Furnis,
and P.A. Johnson, London School of Economics.
The Great Britain Historical GIS Programme has also
produced digitised boundary data, which can be obtained from
the EDINA UKBORDERS service at the Edinburgh University Data

The GBHD Online is intended to assist historians
with localised interests. Therefore, within any one request
to use the GBHD Online, a user may obtain
data for: one standard region OR up to four

Users must first register with the Economic and Social Data
Service (ESDS)
(if they are not already) before using GBHD Online. This will require Federated access user
management authentication. For information on registration and authentication please see ESDS Login and registration help.
Once registered you will then be able to order data from
both AHDS History and the UK Data Archive and register specifically
for GBHD Online by placing an order for SN
3960. During the ordering process you will need to accept
the special access conditions, indicate that you require access
by 'other media', select data format 'other' and specify in
the 'notes' section which Standard Region or Counties you
wish to obtain data for. By ordering SN 3960 you will automatically
be given access to all tables within GBHD Online.
You will then be issued with a user name and password within
15 days, which will give you access to GBHD Online for 12
months. These will allow you to access GBHD Online directly
from the link at the top of this page.
