3321 Victorian Household Panel Study, 1890-1893

Release 1a

Subject Category:

VII\B - Economic processes and indicators - Economic indicators and behaviour

XV - Historical studies

X\A - General studies - Employment and labour

Depositor:

Principal Investigator:

Sponsor:

Grant Number: ESRC : F00232382 (1987); R000221246 (1995)

British Academy: Personal research grant (1987); Major research grant (1994).

Abstract:

The Victorian Household Panel Study was compiled to investigate the determinants of worker effort and productivity. The data have been compiled from four sources: the wages book(1) and plans(2) of Garesfield Bute pit at High Spen in County Durham; the Ordnance Survey map of 1895(3); the 1891 Census of Population(4). It contains detailed information about the households, work places and assignments, output and pay of hewers, putters and supervisory underground workers in the pit for a period of 30.5 months from June 1890 to January 1893.

The present release consists of a simple transcription of the first source listed above. This is of limited use for analysis, since it omits codes linking workers across pays, and the wages book to the other three sources. It also omits the data from these three sources. Potential users are therefore urged to contact the depositor John Treble or the Data Archive before beginning any analysis, or to await future releases.

The datafiles are full transcriptions of historical sources and contain a mixture of free text data and numeric values. The structure of the data is not a rectangular matrix with variables as columns and records rows, but rather each spreadsheet mirrors the structure of the original source almost exactly. As a consequence, this data cannot easily be used in a standard relational database system.

3276 British Parliamentary Divisions on Repeal of the Corn Laws, Including M.P. Party Affiliation and Constituency Characteristics, 1832-1846

Abstract:

The data were gathered to explain the timing of the repeal of the Corn Laws by developing and testing a model that links the economic composition of British county and borough constituencies to the voting behaviour of Members of Parliament on trade policy during the period from 1826 to 1846. The model seeks to demonstrate that electoral reform and export growth and diversification during the 1830s and early 1840s, both independently and through their influence on the party affiliation of M.P.s, raised the political cost to M.P.s of maintaining a protectionist policy, thereby contributing to the policy shift from protectionism to Free Trade.

Abstract:

This dataset contains data concerning stock prices from John Castaing's Course of Exchange, which appeared twice a week (on Tuesdays and Fridays) from 1698 throughout the following century. The data is particularly important for arguments concerning market efficiency, based on actual price movements, for the international market in credit, and for such discussions as the `crowding out' thesis (that is, the relationship between war finance and the Industrial Revolution in England).

Information has been collected on a total of 696 foreign companies which established 1007 subsidiaries in the UK to undertake manufacturing. There is also information on a smaller number of banks and retailers. The database contains information on the entry and exit of each subsidiary, the names and nationality of the inward investor, the type of investment, product description, mode of entry, and fate. For five benchmark years - 1885, 1907, 1935, 1955 and 1962 - there is a description of the stock of fdi's in existence in Britain, with details on head office location; Standard Industrial Classification product code; type of ownership; plants and their locations; employee numbers; management; whether the British subsidiary exported or imported; financial details; and whether the subsidiary had an r & d capacity.

3139 1891 Census Project, Spitalfields

Depositor:

Rau, D., Jewish Historical Society of England

Principal Investigator:

Rau, D., Jewish Historical Society of England

Sponsor:

Jewish Historical Society of England; Board of Deputies of British Jews. Community Research Unit

Abstract:

The Census Project was set up by the Jewish Historical Society and the Board of Deputies Community Research Unit. A database was compiled of the population of an area in Spitalfields in the East End of London in 1891, using Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet and working from photocopies of the microfilm of the enumerators' books. It built on a pilot project using the 1881 census for the same area, developing the methodology and providing a comparative dataset.

The area was chosen for the 1891 Census Project because of its high concentration of Jewish population, as shown on the Russell and Lewis Jewish East London map of 1901. The database contains the complete population of the area.

Universe Sampled:

Location of units of observation: Subnational; Town/village: Spitalfields; Region/county: East London; Country: England; Population keywords: Census data/Households

Main Topics:

The area contained a total of 7,561 people on the census night of 1891. There are 1,353 schedules, for the purpose of the study called households, and the first person listed on each schedule is termed Head of Family. The details for each household include the address, number of rooms if less than five, name of each person, relation to Head of family, marital status, sex, age, occupation, whether employer, employee or neither, birthplace, deaf and dumb/blind/lunatic.

Coding has been added so that each individual has a separate four-part number indicating numeric order, enumerator, schedule and order in household. There is also an estimated non-Jewish classification; occupational classifications under two systems; and a birthplace classification. This coding facilitates rapid analysis of the data, although it presents certain problems: interpretation is not always straightforward and categories are not always clear-cut. A separate alphabetical Index of Heads has also been produced.

Abstract:

The Ashford study aimed to create a machine-readable database of information relating to the social and economic activities of the inhabitants of Ashford in the mid to late nineteenth century. Material has been transcribed from the census enumerator's books, civil registers of births, marriages and deaths, poll books, trade directories and Parliamentary sessional papers listings of landowners. Each source is held as a separate data file containing the following information:

1) Census data: the data consists of all persons residing in Ashford and surrounding rural areas on the night of the censuses of 1841, 1851 and 1861. However, the data file for 1841 is only a partial transcript as some of the original enumerator's books are missing. The data comprise one record for each individual transcribed as recorded in the source with some additional information.

2) Civil register data: The data comprise all marriages which took place in Ashford churches between 1837 and 1870, in total about 1600, of which around 600 were in non-conformist churches. Also recorded are births and deaths registered in the Ashford division of the West Ashford Union, including the parishes of Bethersden, Great Chart, Hothfield, Kingsnorth, Shadoxhurst and Ashford. For each marriage two records were prepared, one for the husband and for the wife thereby retaining all details of the marriage. Births and deaths are recorded as in the original source with some minor coding.

3) Directory data: The data comprise details of various members of the community including local officers, gentry, professionals, shopkeepers and traders.

4) Electoral data: The data comprise details of enfranchised members of constituencies and how they cast their votes in the Parliamentary elections of 1852, 1857, 1863 and 1868.

5) Landowners data: The data comprise details of landowners, land and estimated rental for all those people with addresses in the East or West Ashford Union who owned land in Kent.

2458 Contentious Gatherings in Britain, 1758-1834

Subject Category:

XV - Historical studies

XXVI\A\1\(a) - General studies - United Kingdom - Public opinion - Political behaviour and attitudes

XXXII\D - Perceptions of inequality - Social structure and social stratification

Depositor:

ICPSR

Principal Investigator:

Horn, N.Tilly, C.

Abstract:

This study records discontinuous, concerted, contentious forms of collective action occurring in the London region from 1758 to 1820 and in Britain as a whole from 1828 to 1834. These contentious gatherings are defined as occasions on which at least ten or more persons assembled in a publicly-accessible place and either by word or deed made claims that would, if realized, affect the interests of some person or group outside their own number. In the world of eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain such gatherings would include almost every event that an observer or historian would label disturbance, disorder, riot, or protest in addition to the numberous meetings, rallies, marches, processions, celebrations, and other sanctioned assemblies during which people made claims. One of the aims of the principal investigators was to study the structure of debate and political action among citizens in a major Western state during a period of transition to the more formal methods of modern popular collective action such as voting, petitioning and participation in special-interest associations.

This study represents one of 11 datasets which together constitute the BRIT database. This database was produced by research groups at the Center for Research on Social Organization at the University of Michigan and at the Center for Studies of Social Change (CSSC) at the New School for Social Research and combines two overlapping studies; the Great Britain Study and the Geography of Contention in London Study. Documentation provided with this dataset refers to all parts of the BRIT database but only one dataset, EVENT, which contains coded descriptions of the contentious gathering as a whole, is available at present and is described in detail. Users who desire further information on the BRIT database should consult CSSC Working Paper #32, Catalogs of Contention in Britain, 1758-1834 by Nancy Horn and Charles Tilly. The present documentation is excerpted from that working paper.

Abstract:

The data from the Census Enumerators' books for the Isle of Sheppey for the censuses of 1851, 1861 and 1871 were collected as part of a study which aimed to investigate the development of the workforce in Sheerness Naval Dockyard as an occupational community between 1820 and 1960. In addition to the census data, the study collected other documentary materials and involved oral history interviews.

Universe Sampled:

Location of units of observation: Subnational; Town/village: Sheerness; Region/county: Isle of Sheppey/Kent; Country: England; Population keywords: Census data/Dockyard workers

Census enumerators data was collected for all dockyard workers and included all information about the individuals (i.e. age, sex, marital status, occupation, birthplace) and most information about their household and family situations.

The data is on two separate tapes. On the one known as the unlinked file there is a separate case for each dockyard worker at each census. In the linked file each case contains the details relating to an individual dockyard worker at all three censuses. Thus a dockyard worker recorded at each census would have one case associated in the linked file and three cases in the unlinked file. The unlinked file is intended to allow analysis of the dockyard in the separate census years and aggregate changes between censuses, while the linked file is intended to allow analysis of individual changes between the censuses.

Abstract:

To produce a computer atlas of agriculture in England and Wales circa 1840. The tithe surveys were made following the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836 which ended tithe payments to the Church. It was the largest survey of land use, ownership and occupation since the Domesday survey of 1086 and was not equalled again until 1910. It provides information on land use, the condition of rural and urbanising England in the mid-nineteenth century, rural landscape, settlement patterns, roads and enclosure.

Data was obtained from parish-township documents compiled under the terms of the Tithe Commutation Act, 1836. In particular, reports on tithe agreements in 6,740 tithe files (PRO Class IR 18) contain data on land use, the acreage and yields of crops and the stocking of grassland at parish/township level. All these numerical data were transcribed and are included in this dataset. In addition, the reports on tithe agreements contain general descriptions of local soils and farming practices written by assistant tithe commisssioners and local agents in the course of commutation proceedings. Furthermore, the bulk of the remaining 7,989 tithe files contain minutes of local commutation meetings with evidence on farming, tithe history, condition of the clergy, enclosures, boundaries, etc. All the 14829 tithe files were subject-indexed by applying numerical codes to some 250 subject headings. These provide both an index to the general contents of papers in each title file, and also presence/absence data on a number of phenomena/activities.

Abstract:

The objects of the project were,

1. To draw a two per cent systematic stratified cluster sample from the enumerators' books; the cluster unit is the settlement for settlements of less than 2,000 population (England and Wales only), twenty successive individuals in every 1,000 (adjusted so that families are not broken up) for institutions, and one enumerators book in fifty for the rest of the country.

2. To prepare a complete machine-readable transcript of the roughly 400,000 individual entries resulting from the sample.

3. To code the data by computer into standardised numerical form using specially developed coding directories and appropriate coding software.

4. To prepare a number of data sets in appropriate formats for use with standard data analysis packages.

5. To employ the data set via package or other software to explore various salient aspects of the nineteenth century social and economic structure at national, regional, occupational and other levels of analysis and to write up the results for publication.

6. To make available to interested parties data sets of a kind suitable for their purposes whether in the form of transcripts, coded data sets in various formats, photocopies of partially processed data and so on.

7. To produce special tabulations for interested scholars (subject to constraints of time and computing resources) and to assist others in doing tabulation or preparing their own software to access the data.

8. To make available ancillary products of the data set such as coding directories, code books etc.

9. To act as a centre of expertise in problems of census analysis and of the National Sample data sets.

Sampling Procedures:

One-stage cluster sample: stratified two percent systematic cluster sample from the enumerators' books. Institutions (defined as all institutions recorded in the footnotes to the published census) are sampled on the basis of twenty successive individuals in every 1,000; where family groups overrun the end of the twenty individual block, the block is extended to the end of the family group; where the block would otherwise begin in the middle of a family group the block begins with the first individual after the end of the family group. For Scotland, the enumerator's book is the sample unit, every fiftieth successive book being selected. For England and Wales, settlements of less than 2,000 population are sampled in their entirety, on a one in fifty basis, a settlement being defined as any place named in the main tabulations of the first part of the published census. For the rest of these countries the unit, as in Scotland, is the enumeration district. The sample consists of 945 clusters; the total sample is around 400,000 individuals
